“Yes, You Too Can Deliver Pain-Free”

Have you ever heard of a painless childbirth?

Did you know that some lucky women experience an orgasm during their delivery?  Famous Midwife Ina May Gaskin took a poll and reported 21 percent of women claimed they had an orgasm with at least one of their natural childbirths. Imagine yourself in such bliss!

The Truths Of A Painless Childbirth

Hundreds of women have a painless childbirth everyday.  If this is new news to you, don’t worry as our culture has been doing its best to destroy the safety and beauty of normal childbirth for many generations.  Thus you may wonder if a painless childbirth really is possible?

If you are you excited to learn and prepare for an un-medicated natural childbirth with a labor that is dignified and empowering you have come to the right place. Fit For Birth’s secrets for a painless natural childbirth teaches you how listening to your body, applying abdominal breathing, and being physically and mentally prepared ensures you a calm, quiet and relaxed labor.  According to Susan McCutcheon (Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way), “Relaxation not only diminishes our responses to pain but reduces and eliminates the sensation itself”.

But by far, the largest obstacle inhibiting your painless childbirth is Fear, fear of the pain in labor and delivery, fear of possible complications, and fear of the unknown.   Fear that has been taught to you from family, friends, your partner, doctors or midwives, books, television shows, movies, the news, and even the Bible. So how can you re-program years of fear and doubt?

How Can You Eliminate the Fear of Pain in Childbirth?

If you are to deliver pain-free you must prepare in advance, ideally months in advance.  Ignorance of pregnancy, labor and delivery will not guide you through a pain-free birth in the hospital, birth center or at home.  But understanding and confidence of your magical body can replace your inhibiting influence of fear.  In our Fit For Birth course you will learn how to prepare yourself for the birth of your baby in a way that enables you to relax.  Dr. Dick-Read author of Childbirth Without Fear, explains without relaxation there is tension that causes resistance and then pain, particularly during the first stage of labor.  It is a scientific fact that a completely relaxed person cannot experience pain.

Knowledge and confidence are two of the major roles in eliminating fear of childbirth as Dr. Dick-Read states, pain can be eliminated in over 90 percent of laboring women by substituting understanding for fear, but other contributing factors include proper breathing, exercise, choosing your right care-taker, educating your partner, and eliminating any influences that can drag you back to the “fear zone”.

  So What Makes Labor Painless?

If there were only one answer it would be eliminating fear and substituting knowledge, but there are many other contributing factors that greatly ease your labor and delivery.  In Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way, Susan McCutheon states “In order to insure relaxation, the laboring woman should use abdominal breathing” and Janet Balaskas, author of Active birth adds if during labor you feel tense, anxious, or fearful, you can use deep breathing to calm and center yourself.  Deep abdominal breathing is a proven method to relax the body that breaks the fear-tension-pain relationship.

According to Dr. Clapp author of Exercising Through Your Pregnancy, women who exercised during their pregnancy had a 35 percent decrease in the need of pain medication and a 75 percent decrease in maternal exhaustion.  Exercising not only increases your mind body relationship, it creates natural pain relief, called endorphins, and it is a scientific fact the more you exercise the more endorphins you release, and it becomes easier for your body to release these natural pain-killers, which by the way are 200 times stronger than any synthetic pain reliever.  These endorphins are released in labor, so would you want more endorphins or less?

Mentally an physically preparing yourself for long hours of hard work, for powerful sensations, and an understanding of exactly what your body is going to go through during each stage of labor will reward you with the most empowering moment of your life.  If you believe you can have a painless birth, you are already one step ahead.  As you may already know: If you believe labor will be painful it will be and if you believe it is an amazing natural phenomena, that only you as a woman can do painlessly, it will be.  So what do you want to believe?

How Did We Discover The Secrets Of Painless Childbirth?

When we found out I was pregnant we were so excited to prepare for a natural childbirth!  It was a no-brainer decision until we started searching for a doctor.  To our surprise, it was extremely difficult to find a doctor who supported our wishes.  We also quickly realized how much we did not know about natural childbirth and the dilemma women face when birthing in hospitals.

We have lived an extremely holistic life, coaching hundreds of men, women, children, and pregnant women for the past 10 years.  But we soon realized, we were experts in prenatal exercise and nutrition but so unfamiliar with the choices pregnant women really have when searching for birth options and the actual birthing process.  Yes, we knew physically what happens to the body, but we lacked the knowledge of the emotional connection and the importance educating pregnant women like myself about the stages of labor.

After giving up on finding a natural doctor and hearing so many horror birth stories from moms who delivered in the hospital, we thought we were going to fly to another country to deliver as my parents lived in Switzerland at the time.  We thought for sure we would find better care there.  I even went there for 2 weeks to scout places to birth, but once my parents were informed of my great idea, they were extremely reluctant, because of their fear if something were to happen, my hospital bills would be extremely expensive in another country.  Not only that, my mom was extremely nervous as she went into preterm labor with two babies, and they both died.  And she attempted a VBAC with me but was rushed for an emergency C-Section due to malpresentation.  I understood why she had so much fright but I had to explain to her that this is my birth and it did not need to be a repeat of her tragic experiences.

Unfortunately, many women listen to their mother’s fears and then doubt their ability to birth naturally and pain free.  I started to see a common theme, all of my friends wanted to birth in the hospital, just in case something were to happen.  They all were in fear, and guess what, all of them either were induced, had an epidural, or they were rolled off to a C-Section.  I knew I had to find a midwife if I wanted to experience the great joy and self-satisfaction of being a woman and that is what I did.

To my surprise, there were three birth centers within and hour of my home.  I toured the Miami Maternity Center first, and felt so comfortable that I didn’t even look at the others.  Not only that, I fell in love with them when I was informed they had a midwifery program!  I felt my new passion bubbling inside, I wanted to become a midwife.  With no time to waste, I enrolled in the midwifery program when I was 4 months pregnant, attending classes at night, performing prenatal visits during the day, and assisting in deliveries day and night within a month.

I became obsessed with natural birth and angered that so many women, who were merely unprepared for childbirth, were being stripped of the beauty and empowerment of natural birth.  Not only that, they ended up birthing in fear which led to pain, which led to intervention, which led to fetal distress, which led to more anxiety, and in the end a traumatic experience.  And this happens thousands of times every day.  I knew I had to find a way to educate moms not only about their options for birth, but the truths of childbirth and how to reinstate courage and confidence in the phenomena of natural childbirth.

I remember the first time I transferred a mom to the hospital as she was stuck at 9 centimeters for hours.  I thought no big deal, we will go to the hospital, the staff will welcome her, the doctor will check her and decide on a protocol.  Well I was a little mistaken.  We arrived to the labor and delivery floor where the nurses were fighting with me, saying they could not see her and that no one had informed them we were on our way.  After a few phone calls to the doctor, who was notified of the transfer, they found her a bed and a gown.  This initial entrance changed the laboring mom’s entire state of mind, and she immediately started to fear what was going to happen.  She held my hand tightly as the nursed strapped her fetal monitors on and told her she was going to check her and it might hurt.  I felt so bad for the laboring mom, as tears started to roll down her cheeks.  She thought she was a failure and the nurses were treating her like one, implying a mood of why would you even try a natural birth.  I only imagined the treatment and fear other laboring moms were experiencing, women who did not have someone at their side who believed in them, encouraging the progress they were making.

I know not every hospital is like this but statistics prove this trend as C-section rates are at their highest, and some hospitals boast induction rates as high as 80%.  Nurses feel pressured to keep their laboring women “on schedule” dripping pitocin into the IV.  Not only that, they are overloaded with patients and can’t spend time dealing with the laboring mom’s emotions.  It really has become a factory, and it is quite disturbing.

So here I am now informing you on your choices and encouraging you to experience the most beautiful thing in life, the natural, pain-free birth of your newborn baby.

My Birth Story

It was June 2nd , around 3 am I was awakened by mild contractions.  This was new to me as I never felt Braxton Hicks contractions during my pregnancy.  My intuition told me, today was the day, I was in labor.  I went back to bed, knowing I needed rest for the long day ahead of me.  At 7 am I got a call from the birth center, calling me in to coach a laboring mom and I proudly replied, I will be there soon, but not to coach today, I too am going to have my baby.  Around 10 am I went to the birth center to be checked, and sure enough I was in labor.  I was 3 centimeter, effacing nicely, and the baby was engaged in the pelvis.

I left the center to get some lunch and rented a few movies, knowing a first time labor can take many hours.  To my surprise, my contractions stopped as I watched the movies.  It seemed so weird at the time, but when I look back, it is just another example of the natural course of labor, unpredictable and uncontrollable.  The baby comes when it is ready.

Eventually, James asked me, “Do you want to have your baby today, or do you want to watch another movie?”  Well we opted for the baby, so we turned off the television and just hung out like two little love birds, and sure enough the contractions resumed.  We swayed together and rested together for a few more hours.  Around 10 p.m. I decided it was time to go to the birth center, I could feel the changes occurring in my body, the contractions were becoming more intense, and I could only think about climbing into a warm tub of water.

When I arrived I was 7 centimeters (10 is complete).  I climbed right into the warm water and completely relaxed for an hour.  What a great recovery period.  I then decided I was ready to meet my little baby, so I started squatting in the tub and in a way dancing with the contractions, allowing my little baby to work his way down the birth canal.

By 2:15 I was complete and Kaden was delivered 15 minutes later, pain-free!  Watch my birth.

Finally, the Truths Of Labor And Delivery

The TV and Media have instilled in us that childbirth is painful and frantic.  The pregnant woman panics as her water suddenly breaks.  The dad is frantically running around the house, looking for the already packed suitcase.  He finds it, grabs it and runs to the car, forgetting his partner.  They finally arrive the emergency room drop off where a nurse rolls out the wheelchair and the panicked couple is escorted to the labor and delivery floor where she screams her baby out.

    The truth is

-Less than 7% of labors begin with broken waters.

-Labor usually lasts between 12 and 24 hours for a first time mom.

-A mom can push anywhere from a couple of minutes to a couple of hours.

-If your water breaks first, you still may not have contractions for minutes up to hours.

-Every interventive obstetric technique has known side effects for mother and baby.

-Your body produces much stronger analgesic and anesthetic drugs naturally through hormones.

-If you do not fear the birthing experience, it is beautiful and painless.

How Do Other Cultures Birth?

In other cultures, childbirth is regarded as a natural, normal event in a woman's life. In Brigette Jordan’s book Birth in Four Cultures she wrote: “There is in Dutch participants a deep-seated conviction that the woman’s body knows best and that, given enough time, nature knows best and that, given enough time, nature will take its course”.  How often do you hear this from your doctor?  The birthing women in other cultures are given support from other women, and children are often present to witness the event. In this way, birth is celebrated and honored. Young girls then grow up with the belief system that birth is a positive event and their expectations of childbirth reflect this attitude. As a result, their births are similar to their predecessors, without pain and fear. They have a positive expectation of childbirth. In our culture, it is very much the opposite.

For many generations we have been told that delivering a baby is many hours of painfully agonizing work, to be faced with fear and trepidation. We have heard stories from well-meaning friends and family that send shivers up our spines, and so the legacy continues. We experience pain in childbirth, in part because we very much expect to: unless you change your perspective and train for your natural painless birth, you too can fall victim to a scary birth.
